Ch 1

Mid-May 2007

Kayte crossed her arms and glared at the moving truck blocking the street. ‘Friggin people.’ Kayte said out the window as her sister drove around the block. ‘Don’t be such a hot head. It’s our new neighbor.’ ‘I doubt they’ll be here for long.’ Kayte said as Kerrie parked the car. Kayte grabbed her bag out of the trunk and started towards the moving truck. ‘You know something. This is blocking the street and I don’t remember seeing signs about this.’ She said with her hands on her hips. Kerrie came walking over shaking her head. ‘Kayte, don’t be rude.’ Kayte shot her sister an icy glare as she walked into the house. ‘Sorry about that.’ ‘Don’t be the truck is actually blocking the street.’ The brown haired man said smiling. ‘Hey Nick, you should get your movers to park the truck a little bit better.’ Kerrie half smiled as she started towards her door but the man came walking over. ‘I’m Howie by the way. Nick is actually moving in to the second floor condo, I’m just helping out.’ ‘I’m Kerrie.’ She said extending her hand. ‘Nice to meet you. Most of the neighbors here don’t seem to friendly.’ ‘The locals don’t like the new people moving in and the new people that moved in usually aren’t that friendly. That’s why my sister is so hostile. We’ve lived here forever and we’ve seen so many people move in and out.’ ‘She didn’t seem to hostile.’ ‘I managed to stop her before she went overboard.’ ‘Nick, come over here and meet your neighbor.’ Howie said waving him over. Nick wiped his forehead on the back of his hand as he walked over. ‘Kerrie this is Nick. Nick this is Kerrie.’ ‘Finally someone who is nice. The lady who lives in the yellow house nearly took my head off when we pulled up.’ ‘The people here go crazy if you don’t put up moving signs.’ ‘Ah.... so I pissed everyone off and I’m not even moved in.’ He said laughing. ‘Don’t worry about her she is moody and her family goes away for most of the summer. Her husband is nice though but her daughters act just like her.’ ‘Any other people to avoid?’ ‘The older lady in the blue house is a gossip queen. I’m related to her and she’d bash me without thinking twice. Other than that everyone else is decent. The family in the maroon house is nice but a bit eccentric and there is a crazy woman in the brick house on the corner.’ ‘Thanks, it was nice to meet you.’ ‘If you guys need help with anything let me know. Like if you need numbers for pizza and such. Also don’t park across the street on school days you’ll get a ticket and street cleaning is Fridays.’ ‘So that’s what that building is.’ ‘Yea, it’s Kindergarten to 8th grade. I actually work there.’ ‘Very cool.’ ‘I better get going; my dog needs to go out.’ ‘See yea later.’ Nick said walking away. ‘Kerrie?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘I know this may seem forward but would you like to go out to dinner tomorrow?’ ‘Sure, that sounds great.’ ‘How about 7?’ Kerrie nodded. ‘See you then.’ ‘Bye.’ Kerrie walked into the house to see her sister sitting on her couch.

Ch 2

‘Flirting with the neighbors?’ ‘A little, you know the guy you went off on isn’t even our neighbor.’ ‘Opps... so?’ ‘So what?’ ‘What did you talk about?’ ‘Just basic stuff.’ ‘Why are you smiling so much?’ ‘I have a date.’ ‘With the neighbor or friend?’ ‘His friend.’ ‘Details?’ ‘I’m not sharing right now but I do think you should apologize sometime.’ ‘Maybe, see yea later.’ Kayte walked up the stairs as her sister went to go get Kasey ready for her walk. When she got back she took a shower then relaxed on the couch watching some TV. 2 hours later Kayte came down the stairs and started going through her sister’s wardrobe. ‘What are you doing?’ ‘I’m going to pick out an outfit for your date.’ ‘I can pick out my own clothes.’ ‘You know I’ll do a much better job.’ Kayte settled on a pair of white dress pants and a black 3/4 shirt. ‘Thanks, Kayte.’ ‘Whatcha watching?’ Kayte asked sitting on the chair by the window. ‘Pride and Prejudice, nothing is on TV.’ ‘You and these sappy romance movies. Look your date is outside. I’ll go apologize.’ Kerrie smirked as she watched her sister go outside. ‘Umm hi, I’m sorry for freaking on you this afternoon.’ ‘It’s not a problem; your sister explained the situation.’ ‘Yea, you seem like a nice guy so don’t hurt her. I’m Kayte by the way.’ She said before walking away and nearly bumping into a blonde. ‘Sorry.’ Kayte mumbled. ‘You must be Kerrie’s sister. I’m your new neighbor, Nick.’ He said grinning. ‘Nice to meet you. I’m Kayte.’ She said half smiling before she walked into the house. The next morning Kerrie woke up early to go coach her t-ball game. She arrived at the field at 8:30 for her 9am game. ‘Hey Kerrie, I hear you have a date tonight?’ Debbie, the woman who ran the t-ball league, said walking over to her. ‘Who told you?’ ‘I saw Kayte in Dunkins this morning.’ ‘She loves to tell all.’ ‘So you’re finally over Jason?’ ‘I was never hung up on him. I realized he was a jerk.’ ‘Oh yes.’ Kerrie stopped the conversation as her team started to arrive. ‘Do I know him?’ She managed to get out. ‘No, new in town.’ Kerrie said picking up her large bag and walking down to the field. Kerrie had been coaching t-ball for the last 8 years. She loved teaching the kids the basics of baseball. This was her 5th year coaching a team made up of 2 year olds. Granted she didn’t get to teach them much but most of them learned how to hit off a t and run the bases on their own. Kerrie also helped run the program. All of the parents loved to see someone as young as her running the program and doing such a great job. Her team alone had 40 children and the older teams had 100 children from ages 3 to 6. For the next hour Kerrie worked with her team before going up to talk to Debbie. Kerrie managed to keep her on the topic of awards day that was at the end of June. After a short discussion Kerrie headed home. When she walked in the door her mother was sitting on the couch asking questions about her plans for that night.

Ch 3

‘Kerrie, what are you doing?’ ‘Coming home.’ ‘No, tonight?’ ‘Going out.’ ‘With who?’ ‘A friend of our new neighbor.’ ‘Kerrie, you don’t think. He could be some psycho and you agree to a date and you don’t even know him.’ ‘Mom, I trust my gut.’ ‘Your gut? Wow there’s a good way to read people.’ ‘Mom, I’m 22. I can make my own choices and I shouldn’t have to explain myself to you.’ ‘Kerrie, I worry about you. Ever since Jason-’ ‘Jason and I were not as serious as you think. He wanted someone he could control and obviously that wasn’t me. I know you liked him and assumed he’d be your son-in-law someday but he wasn’t for me.’ Kerrie said walking into the kitchen and grabbing a bottle of water. ‘Kerrie, I worry about you.’ Her mother said when she walked back into the room. ‘Mom, I’ll be fine.’ ‘I want to meet him.’ ‘Later, I’m surprised you hadn’t gone out to meet him yesterday.’ ‘If I see him I’m going out to introduce myself.’ Kerrie half smiled as her mother walked back upstairs. Kerrie spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing on the couch watching TV. At 6pm Kayte came down. ‘Well....’ She said sitting on the chair across from her sister. ‘Well, what?’ ‘Why aren’t you getting ready?’ ‘Unlike you it doesn’t take me hours.’ Kerrie said smirking then walked into the bathroom. 10 minutes later she came out in her robe. ‘Go get dressed and have fun tonight. I’ll expect a full report tomorrow.’ Kayte said smiling as she walked upstairs. Kerrie finished getting ready then went to hang out in the living room for the remaining 20 minutes. At 7 on the dot the doorbell rang and Kerrie grabbed her bag and walked to the door. Howie was dressed in a pair of tan pants and a black shirt. He grinned when he saw her. ‘You look great.’ ‘Thanks, you look good too.’ Kerrie said locking the door as they walked down the steps. ‘I made reservations at Tavern on the Water for 7:30. I was thinking we could walk and you could show me around.’ ‘Sounds good.’ They took their time walking to the restaurant which is normally a 10 minute walk. Kerrie pointed out all the fancy real estate around the Bunkerhill Monument and showed him where the USS Constitution was in the Navy Yard. Tavern on the Water is located on Boston harbor and has a great view from the outside patio. They arrived at 7:30 and were seated inside in the back in the more quiet area away from the bar.

Ch 4

Kerrie and Howie had a lot in common. They talked all through dinner and the walk back home. ‘I had a great time tonight.’ Kerrie said sitting on the steps. ‘Me too, thanks for showing me around.’ They continued talking for a few minutes before Nick came walking down the street with his dogs. ‘Hey you two.’ He said walking over. ‘Hi Nick.’ ‘There are so many dogs in the neighborhood. These two are freaking out.’ ‘Most of the dogs around here are decent. There are a few owners you need to worry about though.’ Kerrie said laughing. ‘There’s one over there. That guy with those two greyhounds is a jerk. One day he yelled at me saying Kasey was disturbing his dogs and told me to cross the street.’ ‘That’s rude. I’ll defiantly stay away from him.’ There was a knock on the glass and Kerrie’s mother looked out the window. Kerrie gave a weak wave. ‘Is that your mom?’ Nick asked. ‘Yup, I bet she’s on her way down.’ A few moments later the door opened and a woman came walking out. ‘Hi mom, this is Howie and Nick.’ ‘Nice to meet you two. Which one is our new neighbor?’ ‘I am.’ Nick said. Ellen asked them a few questions before going inside. ‘That was mild.’ Kerrie said laughing. ‘Kerrie!’ A little girl came running over. ‘Where’s Kasey?’ ‘Hi Molly, Kasey’s inside sleeping.’ ‘I don’t like it when she jumps on me.’ ‘We’re working on that. Molly, this is Nick and Howie.’ ‘Did you move into that house?’ She asked. ‘I did, Howie’s helping me.’ ‘I better go find mom. Bye.’ Molly took off running back to the corner as a woman reached the top of the hill and waved. ‘That’s Molly’s mother, Corine. We’re second cousins. Molly is a very talkative 3 year old.’ ‘She’s only 3?’ Kerrie nodded. After a few minutes of talking Nick’s cell phone rang. ‘I better get inside. It’s my sister. Bye Kerrie.’ He went inside with the house with the dogs as silence fell over them. It felt right sitting there together. Howie took Kerrie’s hand as she smiled. ‘I should go it’s getting late.’ Howie said not really wanting the night to end. Kerrie leaned over and kissed him. Howie was surprised but kissed her back. After a few moments they moved apart. ‘That was nice.’ Howie said smiling. ‘Yea, it was.’ ‘I really want to spend some more time with you.’ Kerrie nodded. ‘Me too.’ She said smiling. ‘Are you free tomorrow?’ Kerrie asked. ‘Sure.’ ‘If you want I can show you around Salem. It’s really cool, granted it’s not October.’ She said stopping not that she realized she was beginning to ramble. ‘That should great.’ ‘Ok, how about we leave at 1?’ Howie nodded. ‘I had a good time tonight.’ Kerrie said smiling. ‘Me too. See you tomorrow.’ Howie kissed her before walking over to the steps of the house and waving. Kerrie stood up and went into the house with a big smile. Not two minutes later Kayte came down the stairs and asked Kerrie all about the date.

Ch 5

The next day Kerrie woke up around 11 and started to get ready for the day. She dressed in a pair of jean shorts and a fitted Red Sox shirt. Kerrie’s mother came down the stairs at 12:30 to see Kerrie fixing her hair. ‘Where are you going?’ ‘Out.’ ‘With Howie?’ Her mother asked. ‘Yes, I am.’ ‘Oh, I was hoping you’d take me to the store.’ ‘Sorry, we’re leaving in a half an hour.’ ‘Ok. When you come back Jason may be here. I called him and asked if he could come down and fix my computer.’ Kerrie rolled her eyes. Jason was her ex-fiancée and she still held some resentment 3 months later. ‘Why don’t you give me a call when he’s gone?’ ‘Kerrie, I still happen to think Jason is a nice guy and he was good for you. You’re just afraid of commitments.’ ‘Mom, Jason is still not over his ex-wife and they’ve been divorced for almost 5 years. Plus he thought that I was gonna be a stay at home mom.’ ‘Kerrie, there is nothing wrong with that. I stayed home with you and Kayte.’ ‘Times have changed, Mom! He is extremely sexist, I’m working my ass to get through college and he wanted me not to use my education.’ Kerrie’s mother didn’t know what to say. ‘You never told me that.’ Was all she came up with. ‘Like it matters. You still think he’s a great guy. I need to go.’ Kerrie shook her head and took a deep breath to calm herself down. Once she got outside and saw it was a great day her mood got a lot better. Howie was sitting on the steps playing with his phone. ‘Hi.’ Kerrie said walking over. ‘Hey.’ He said standing up. ‘Are you ok?’ Howie asked noticing she was a bit quiet. ‘Just a slight disagreement with my mother. Nothing to serious.’ She said half smiling. Kerrie turned her alarm off her car and they got in. ‘How far is Salem?' 'It’s not to far away. It usually takes about a half an hour with some traffic.’ ‘I told Nick we were going here and he started talking about Halloween.’ ‘The whole month of October is crazy is Salem. They have tons of haunted houses as well as tours at night. It’s a lot of fun.’ ‘I hope Nick decides to keep the place. That may make him want to stay. It is his favorite holiday.’ ‘Mine too.’ Kerrie said as she drove onto the high way. They arrived in Salem 20 minutes later. ‘This place does seem really cool.’ Howie said looking around where Kerrie parked. ‘This is Pickering Warfe. It has a lot of small stores. That store is owned by Laurie Cabot, she’s the official witch of Salem.’ ‘For real?’ Howie asked surprised. ‘Yes, it’s true. Salem is known for the Witch Trails and now it has one of the largest population for Wicca and Pagan people in and United States.’ Kerrie and Howie walked towards Salem Commons and Howie took her hand. ‘This is a statue of Nathaniel Hawthorne. That hotel is named after him, it has a haunted room.’ ‘Nick needs to come up here sometime this is his thing.’ Kerrie showed Howie around Salem for the next 2 hours and they went into the Pirate Museum. By the time they left Salem it was after 6 so they stopped for dinner on the way home. ‘What kind of food do you want?’ Kerrie asked pulling onto Route 1. ‘They have ever kind of food you could ever want on his road.’ ‘How about Italian?’ ‘Ok, Polcari's it is.’ Kerrie pulled into the parking lot. Over dinner they continued talking about their past. Howie told her about being a Backstreet Boy and how him and his long time girlfriend broke up 6 months before. Kerrie talked about Jason and their relationship.

Ch 6

When they arrived back in Charlestown Kerrie groaned when she saw Jason’s truck still there. Kayte was sitting on Nick’s steps talking to him. When Kerrie got out of the car Kayte was ready to give her an earful. ‘Nice to tell me that my least favorite person was coming to the house!’ Kayte said glaring at her sister. ‘Hey, don’t take it out on me. I only found out right before I left the house. Mom asked him to fix the computer.’ ‘You could have at least called me so I didn’t have to go home and see him in the house.’ ‘I figured he’d be gone.’ Kerrie said glumly. ‘Kayte told me about this guy. He sounds like an ass.’ Nick said as Howie nodded. ‘Kerrie, why don’t we wait in your house? We shouldn’t have to wait out here for him to leave.’ Kayte said standing up. ‘Sounds good. Do you guys want to come in and hang out?’ They agreed and the four of them went into Kerrie’s apartment. ‘Like the Red Sox much?’ Nick asked seeing all the autographs on the wall. ‘Bostonians bleed baseball.’ Kerrie said laughing. ‘How long did it take you to get all of these?’ Howie asked. ‘Four years. I started in 2003 getting autographs outside of Fenway.’ ‘This is cool. I’m just surprised.’ Nick said sitting on the couch next to Kayte. ‘Didn’t expect a girl to be a die hard fan?’ ‘Exactly.’ There was a knock on the door and Kerrie walked into the hallway. ‘Having a party?’ Her mother asked. ‘No, Kayte didn’t want to be upstairs with him so I invited Nick and Howie in to keep us company.’ ‘Well Jason wants to talk to you.’ ‘I don’t have anything to say to him.’ Kerrie said crossing her arms. Ellen didn’t say anything she just walked up the stairs. ‘She’s at it again?’ Kayte asked. ‘Oh course. She thinks he a saint.’ Kerrie mumbled. Kerrie went out to the kitchen and let Kasey into the room. ‘She’s a big girl.’ Nick said patting her. ‘Yea, everyone thinks she’s half Great Dane.’ They all got back to talking and relaxing. A few minutes later there was a knock on the door. Kerrie reluctantly got up and opened the door. Kasey bared her teeth and started growling. ‘I was hoping I could talk to you but I see you have some guests.’ ‘Jason, I really don’t have anything to say to you. We have been over for nearly 3 months and now you want to talk to me again all of a sudden? I don’t think so.’ Kerrie said and then closed the door in his face. ‘Good job, Kasey.’ Kayte said patting the dog. ‘She really didn’t like him.’ Nick said. ‘He yelled at her once and since then she has hated him.’

Ch 7

The next week passed by quickly. Kerrie and Howie spent a lot of time together. He went with her on Kasey’s afternoon and nightly walks. On Friday they went to the movies. On Saturday afternoon when Kayte got out of work Kerrie, Howie, Nick, and Kayte drove up to New Hampshire. They went mini golfing and went out to dinner before catching fireworks at one of the beaches. Kerrie noticed the way Nick looked at Kayte but she had a feeling Kayte didn’t feel the same. After the fireworks they drove back to Boston. Kerrie and Howie were talking while Kayte and Nick were quiet in the backseat. Nick and Kayte had gone for a walk during the fireworks and Kerrie assumed that Nick told Kayte how he felt since they hadn’t talked since then. When they got back to Charlestown they had to drive around for a bit before finding a parking spot. Kayte went right into the house after mumbling a good-bye and Nick walked into his condo without saying anything. ‘That was tense.’ Kerrie said laughing a little. ‘Yea, I didn’t want to stop talking in the car and have complete silence.’ Howie said as they sat on the front steps of Kerrie’s house. ‘I had a nice time tonight.’ Howie said taking Kerrie’s hand. ‘Me too.’ Kerrie said smiling. ‘Are you free tomorrow?’ Kerrie asked. Howie nodded. ‘Do you want to go downtown? I can show you around a bit and there’s plenty off places to go shopping.’ ‘That sounds like a good idea. I should get inside and try to talk to Nick.’ ‘Yea, I should do the same with Kayte.’ They stood up and Howie leaned forward and kissed Kerrie softly on the lips. ‘Good night.’ ‘Night.’ Kerrie walked inside and went right up to Kayte’s room. ‘What happened with Nick?’ ‘He asked me out on a date.’ ‘And?’ ‘I said that wasn’t a good idea. I don’t feel that way about him.’ Kayte said lying on her bed. ‘Did you at least say it in a decent way and not completely rude?’ Kerrie asked. ‘Yea, I need to get some sleep. I have to be at work at 7.’ Kayte said. ‘Ok, good night.’ Kerrie walked down the stairs shaking her head. In Nick’s condo Howie walked out to roof deck to see Nick sipping a beer. ‘What happened?’ ‘She turned me down.’ Nick muttered. ‘I’m sorry.’ ‘Don’t be. You said I should wait and you’d talk to Kerrie about it.’ ‘Will you be ok?’ ‘Yea, there are plenty of other girls out there right?’ Nick said forcing a smile. ‘Your right. I’m gonna head to bed. Night, Nick.’ ‘Night, D.’

Ch 8

Two days later Nick’s sister, Angel, arrived in Boston to stay for a week. ‘Kayte, are you serious?’ Kerrie asked her sister frustrated. ‘Aimee got great Sox tickets. I’m sure you can find someone to go to Fall Out Boy with you.’ Kayte said as Kerrie sighed. ‘Kayte, the concert is tomorrow.’ ‘Take Howie.’ Kayte suggested. ‘It was supposed to be a girl’s day.’ Kerrie said getting up and walking out of the room. An hour later Kerrie was over at Nick’s condo watching a movie. ‘Angel, are you a Fall Out Boy fan?’ Kerrie asked. ‘Yea, they’re cool.’ ‘Would you like to go to the concert with me tomorrow? Kayte was gonna go with me and now she bailed to go to a Red Sox game.’ ‘I’d love to go. I hear the tour is awesome.’ ‘Nice to ask me.’ Howie said frowning. ‘D, are you crazy? That concert is gonna be all young girls going crazy. Do you really want to subject yourself to that?’ Nick asked laughing. ‘Not really.’ ‘It’s in Mansfield so I was planning on leaving early to beat rush hour traffic getting out of Boston.’ ‘Is traffic really that bad?’ Nick asked sipping some water. ‘Hell yea. If you don’t get through the express way by 4 then you sit there for at least an hour usually more. Now since people are going to the Cape it can be two hours or three on Fridays.’ ‘We’re gonna leave around what time?’ Angel asked. ‘I’m leaving work early, around 1 so we can leave around 2. Not to far from there are really good outlet stores and that’s where I was planning to go for a few hours.’ ‘Sounds good.’ The four of them finished watching the movie and then Kerrie headed back to her house. The following day Kerrie and Angel went to the Fall Out Boy concert. The girls had a great time and got along really well. After the concert they got back to Charlestown really late. Nick and Howie were still up watching the baseball game on TV. ‘How was the concert?’ Howie asked. ‘It was great. It was a kick ass show.’ Kerrie said as Angel nodded. ‘While we were shopping I met a hottie. Kerrie actually knew him.’ Angel said. ‘I wouldn’t say he is a hottie.’ Kerrie said laughing. ‘That’s cause you grew up with him. I have a date tomorrow.’ Angel said walking to her room. ‘What? I don’t think so.’ Nick said following her. ‘Why not? Nick, I’m not a kid. You can’t tell me what to do.’ ‘You just met the guy.’ ‘Nick, back off. I’m gonna go out with Matt and there’s nothing you can do about it.’ Nick walked out of the room. ‘What kind of guy is he?’ ‘Matt’s a decent guy. He came from a good family. He’s a cop.’ Nick nodded. ‘Thanks.’

Ch 9

The next day Nick was still not feeling great about Angel going out with Matt. ‘Nick, do you want to come clubbing with us? We’re meeting up with some people I used to work with.’ Kerrie asked. ‘I don’t know if I should. I’d rather be here incase Angel needs me.’ ‘Nick, she’ll be fine.’ Howie said. ‘If they are going somewhere local I can ask Kayte and Aimee to keep an eye on her.’ ‘I’m sure they wouldn’t do that.’ Nick mumbled. ‘They will. Kayte can’t get involved in my business anymore so she’d jump at the chance to follow someone else.’ ‘What about her friend?’ ‘Aimee wouldn’t mind. The two of them are just hanging out till tonight when there gonna watch the Sox game on TV and drink.’ ‘She’s not even old enough to drink, is she?’ Howie asked confused. ‘She’s not but Aimee’s 23. I can’t really tell her not to cause I had my fair share of drinks before I turned 21.’ Kerrie texted Kayte to see if they would do that. ‘Hello?’ Kerrie asked answering her phone. ‘You want me to spy on someone?’ ‘Not really spy, just make sure things go ok.’ ‘I guess we could do that. Is Nick freaking out?’ ‘A bit, have you apologized yet?’ Kerrie asked quietly. ‘No, why should I apologize for not feeling that way about him?’ ‘Never mind. I’ll give you the details when I get back to the house.’ ‘Ok, se yea.’ Kerrie hung up and phone and nodded. ‘She’ll do it.’ ‘Great, now I can go clubbin.’ ‘The girls I used to work with are great. I know Kim and Sue are bringing their boyfriends but Libby, Mel, and Kathleen are single. I’m gonna head home and call the girls to see where to meet up.’ Kerrie walked back over to her house and called Sue to check on the plans for that night. Sue and her boyfriend, Justin, were going into Boston around 6 to have dinner and grab a drink. All the others were going to meet at Tequila Sun at 10pm.

Ch 10

That night as suspected Angel and Matt had a good time and nothing happened. While out at the clubs everyone had a good time. Linsey kept everyone laughing with her various attempts at dancing. At around 3 Sue and Justin drove Kerrie, Howie and Nick back to Charlestown. ‘It was nice meeting you guys. Once we move into our place we’ll set up a party.’ Sue said. ‘Ok, goodnight. Thanks for the ride.’ ‘Bye.’ Sue and Justin drove off and the three of them sat on Kerrie’s steps. ‘Those girls were crazy.’ Nick said as Howie nodded. ‘Yup, they are like that all the time. When we all worked together everyone else in the building was entertained.’ Kerrie said smirking. ‘Why did you all leave the daycare?’ Howie asked. ‘Mel and I left because we got jobs in public schools. Sue, Kim, and Lindsey got jobs at other day cares because that one was having some serious issues. Four people got fired two months after I left because of abuse allegations.’ Kerrie said shaking her head. ‘That’s crazy.’ ‘Yea, some of the stuff happened when I worked there in the infant department as well as one of the other toddler rooms. A few months after I started working there a guy preschool teacher got fired for swearing at a little girl. After he left I figured the center was fine. I know a lot of the parents pulled their kids.’ ‘People are crazy, how can they hurt kids?’ Nick said. ‘That’s what I say. Some people aren’t meant to be around kids cause they can’t handle the pressure.’ ‘I’m gonna head inside. Thanks for inviting me, I had a good time.’ ‘Night, Nick.’ ‘I’ll be in soon.’ Nick walked inside as Howie and Kerrie continued to talk for a bit before saying goodnight. The next day Kerrie spent the day with Kayte and Aimee, driving them to the mall and then going out to eat. ‘Kerrie, are things getting serious?’ Aimee asked. ‘I think so, they spend a lot of time together.’ Kayte said. ‘Not to be nosey but have you two-’ ‘Don’t even bother asking. She’s terrified of sex.’ ‘Kayte, I am not.’ Kerrie said as her cheeks turned red. ‘I think you are. How many 22 year olds have never had sex besides those who are waiting till their married? Not many.’ ‘Oh shut up, I just haven’t felt ready yet.’ Kerrie mumbled. ‘Honestly people say crap to make you scared, it’s not that bad.’ ‘Ok, enough with this conversation.’ Kerrie said quietly. Aimee and Kayte resumed their conversation about school and then they started talking about Aimee and her fiancée’s wedding plans. By the time Kerrie dropped Aimee off she was ready to spend some time alone. ‘Sorry if I pushed you.’ Kayte said noticing how quiet her sister was. When Kerrie didn’t say anything Kayte continued. ‘It says a lot about you that you’ve waited this long and it’s nothing to be ashamed of-’ ‘Kayte, I’m tired of talking about this ok?’ Kerrie said as they drove along the highway. ‘Alright, sorry.’ Once they got back to the house Kayte brought her bags upstairs and Kerrie went right to her room and lay on the bed looking up at the ceiling. When the phone rang she didn’t answer it, Kerrie pulled out her journal and began writing in it. An hour later Kayte stood in the doorway. ‘Umm.... Kerrie?’ ‘Yea?’ She said not looking up from her notebook. ‘Howie just rang the bell looking for you.’ ‘Can you tell him I’m working on some school work and I’ll call him later?’ Kerrie said writing away. ‘Sure.’ Kayte went to the door. ‘She’s working on some school work right now.’ Kayte said with a frown. ‘What’s the matter?’ Howie asked noticing her expression. ‘I feel like a real jerk now. Aimee and I started talking about stuff we shouldn’t have and Kerrie’s upset about it.’ Kayte said walking outside with him. ‘What did you and Aimee say?’ ‘I don’t think I should tell you..... actually I should because she may act a little weird from now on.’

Ch 11

‘Come on in. Nick’s out.’ Howie said opening the door to Nick’s condo. ‘Well... this might be a surprise but Kerrie’s a-’ ‘Virgin? She told me already.’ ‘She did? Wow... She must really like you then. Most 22 year old have had sex and she’s usually too embarrassed to bring it up.’ ‘She mentioned her past boyfriends being jerks about it so I can understand where she’s coming from.’ Kayte sat down and went through the story anyway and even brought up what her and Aimee said to Kerrie while they were out. ‘Please don’t tell her I told you anything.’ Howie nodded. ‘I should get back and check in on her.’ Howie walked Kayte outside and they bumped into Nick. ‘I got a date.’ Nick said happily. ‘With who?’ Kayte asked. ‘A hottie named Jean.’ ‘Jean Marie?’ Nick shrugged. ‘Is she a blonde, really skinny, blue eyes, dressed nice?’ Nick nodded. ‘Do you know her?’ ‘Unfortunately, she and Kerrie used to be best friends. Jean is a slut and she is the one person Kerrie hates, and that is saying something because Kerrie likes everyone.’ Nick stood there confused as Kayte rushed into the house. ‘Kerrie did mention her before. They used to work together and then Jean cheated on her boyfriend and cause some crazy drama.’ Kerrie came out of the house with Kayte following right behind her. ‘Your gonna go on a date with Jean?’ ‘Should I not?’ ‘She is crazy; I’ve known her since we were really young. We worked together when we were in high school. 3 years ago Jean cheated on her boyfriend, a nice guy that I was friends with, then she accused the guy she was cheating with of raping her.’ Nick pulled out his phone. ‘I’m canceling the date.’ Nick said as he walked into the house. Kayte took this as a signal to leave hoping Kerrie and Howie would talk. ‘Did Kayte talk to you?’ Kerrie asked. Howie couldn’t stand lying to her. ‘Yes.’ Kerrie nodded. ‘I know she has the best intentions but she jumps the gun. She assumes that I can’t handle things. Sorry you got stuck in the middle.’ ‘Are you ok though?’ ‘I will be, just need some more time to clear my head. Just listening to their advice gives me a head ache.’ Kerrie said smirking. ‘Ok.’ ‘How about after I get out of work tomorrow we can go out somewhere?’ ‘Sounds good.’ Kerrie smiled as she walked back to the house.

Ch 12

Later that week Nick went to Chicago for a charity event. Nick was in Chicago for 5 days and while he was there he met Jessica. Jessica was helping coordinate the concert. Right away Nick and Jessica got along great. Jessica was different from most girls Nick knew. She was more intellectual and he liked that about her. During meetings and rehearsals Nick and Jessica spent a good amount of time together. At the end of the week Nick headed back to Boston but he and Jessica exchanged information and planned to stay in touch. When Nick arrived back in Boston things were the same as when he left. At night Nick sat on the stairs in front of the condo with his dogs as a large town car pulled up. When the door opened and Jean got out. Kayte who was walking into the house saw her and texted Kerrie to go outside. Kerrie hurried outside with Howie not to far behind her as Jean stood on the sidewalk. ‘Figures you had something to do with it. Little miss goodie two shoes.’ Jean said with her hands on her hips. ‘Go back to being a sleaz ball and leave Nick alone.’ Kerrie said glaring at her. ‘This isn’t the first time you ruined things for me.’ ‘Why shouldn’t I? I’d be just as bad as you if I let someone get involved with you knowing what could happen.’ Kayte stood in the doorway smirking. ‘Ahh... forget it.’ Jean got back in the car and drove off. ‘She really is crazy.’ Nick said still shocked that she had been standing in front of him a few minutes ago. ‘Lucky for you Kayte saw her and texted me. I don’t know why but she seems to be afraid of me.’ Kerrie said half smiling. ‘I bet she’s afraid that you’ll tell everyone what really happened.’ ‘So many people know, it’s no secret.’ Kerrie said shrugging. ‘I hope that’s the end of her. When Jessica comes to visit I don’t want that to happen.’ ‘If she thinks about showing up again Jean and I are gonna have a little heart to heart.’ Nick smirked as Howie was surprised. ‘Don’t worry I won’t beat her up. I gave up fighting a long time ago. So.... when is Jessica gonna visit?’ Kerrie asked changing the topic. ‘Maybe next month.’ ‘We want to meet this mystery girl that you keep talking about.’ Howie said as Kerrie nodded. ‘Let’s get back to the movie.’ Kerrie said. ‘See yea later, Nick.’

Ch 13

Pretty soon school was out so Kerrie had plenty of free time for the next three weeks until the summer program started. A week after school got out Howie had to go back to Florida for a few days for business so Kerrie and her mother took a short trip to Cap Code for a few days. ‘Sure leave me here with your dog. I see how it is.’ Kayte mumbled as Kerrie put her bag in the car. ‘Kayte, stop complaining. You have the whole summer to hang out and I get a few days here and there.’ ‘You have every weekend to rest.’ ‘Kayte, don’t be jealous. You choose to take time off to go to baseball games instead of going on vacation.’ Ellen said to her youngest daughter as she got into Kerrie’s car. ‘Here’s Kasey’s schedule. She needs to go out at least four times a day.’ Kayte rolled her eyes as she took the paper. ‘She better behave herself.’ ‘Kasey is a good dog. Nick said he’d help out with her if you need him ok?’ Kayte nodded. ‘Have a good time.’ She mumbled and walked back into the house. Those few days passed by quickly and soon enough Kerrie was back. She was unpacking when her phone rang. ‘Hello?’ ‘Hey Kerrie.’ ‘Hi Howie, how’s everything going?’ ‘Pretty good. How was your trip?’ ‘It was ok. The weather wasn’t all the great but we had a good time.’ ‘I just got my flight information. I’ll be getting in at 1 tomorrow.’ ‘Ok, I’ll pick you up.’ ‘You don’t have to. That airport is crazy, I can take a cab.’ ‘I insist. I’ll be at the luggage pick up at 1:15.’ ‘I better get going. I’m meeting my parents for dinner.’ ‘Have fun and see you tomorrow.’ ‘Bye.’ Kerrie hung up the phone and went to go see what Kayte was doing. ‘What yea doing?’ Kerrie asked walking into her sister’s room. ‘Nothing much.’ ‘Want to go to the movies?’ ‘Sure, it’s better then sitting around.’

Ch 14

The next afternoon Kerrie picked up Howie at the airport. They talked about their trips and when they arrived at Kerrie’s apartment they ordered some food. ‘I have a surprise.’ Howie said smirking. ‘What?’ ‘I planned a little trip for us.’ ‘To where?’ ‘It’s a surprise. All I’m gonna stay is that we’re leaving on Monday and we’re coming back Thursday.’ Kerrie nodded. ‘Your not gonna asked any more questions?’ ‘Nope, I’ll just wait and see.’ Howie was in shock. ‘Ok.’ The two days until the trip passed by slowly. The morning they were leaving Kerrie sat on the couch watching TV while eating breakfast. Kayte strolled into her apartment smirking. ‘Ready for your getaway?’ ‘Yea, what do you know about it?’ ‘I’m sworn to secrecy. I helped Howie with some ideas.’ Kerrie shrugged. ‘I’ll know soon enough anyway.’ Kayte shook her head laughing. ‘You freaked Howie out when you said that. He asked me if you hated vacations.’ ‘I can wait for a surprise.’ ‘I told him that. Anyway have a good time. I better get going to work.’ Kayte walked out the door as Kerrie got ready to go. 10 minutes later Kerrie stood outside and exactly at 9 Howie pulled up in a car. ‘Good morning.’ He said getting out and kissing her. ‘Morning.’ Howie tossed her bag in the trunk and he started driving. 2 hours later they arrived in Newport, Rhode Island. ‘Wow, you had a great idea. I’ve never been here before.’ Kerrie said as they arrived at a small hotel on the beach. ‘I asked Kayte what you’d like and she said you like the beach. Since you just went to Cape Cod this was an obvious choice.’ Howie checked them in and they hung around the hotel for a bit before going for a walk on the beach. That afternoon they walked around downtown and had dinner at a quiet bistro. When they got back to the hotel they sat out on the beach for a bit before going inside. Back in Boston Nick was talking to Jessica about when she was going to visit. She had some free time around the 4th of July so they planned for her to visit for about two weeks. Nick was already planning a 4th of July party. AJ, Brian, and his family were all coming up for a few days.

Ch 15

Kerrie and Howie’s trip flew by and soon enough they were back in Boston. Kayte was sitting on Kerrie’s couch waiting to hear about the trip. ‘So....’ Kayte said. Kerrie managed a nod and smile. ‘I’m happy for yea. You’re finally a woman now. How was the rest of your trip?’ ‘It was great.’ ‘That’s good. Andrea called today to see if we were still going to the BBQ tomorrow.’ ‘I completely forgot. What did yea say?’ ‘I said yes and you’d be bringing a guest. I also said you’d be bringing some brownies.’ ‘I should go to the store then.’ Kerrie grabbed her car keys and went to do some shopping. When she got back Howie was on the couch and Kayte was telling him about everyone that was going to be at the party. Kerrie went to start on making the brownies and Kayte took off upstairs. ‘Do you mind going to the BBQ?’ ‘I don’t mind at all. It will be good to meet some of the people you work with.’ ‘Did Kayte warn you some of them are a bit crazy?’ ‘Yup, that was the first thing she said.’ After putting the brownies in the oven they went to sit on the couch to watch some TV. The next afternoon Kerrie, Howie, and Kayte went to the BBQ. Several of Kerrie’s coworkers were there and everyone had a good time. Howie talked to the teacher Kerrie worked with who was in a band on the side. Tim invited them to his band’s concert which was in two weeks. After the BBQ was over they drove back to Charlestown. ‘What did you think of everyone?’ Kayte asked. ‘Everyone I met was really nice. I didn’t see anyone who was too crazy.’ ‘That’s cause May and Tina weren’t there. You only met the mildly crazy ones.’ ‘Kayte, no one is crazy.’ Kerrie said parking the car. ‘I think their crazy; actually I think anyone who wants to work with kids is crazy.’ ‘Kayte, I don’t know why you hate kids so much.’ ‘Kerrie, kids are dirty and smelly and too much to handle.’ Howie shook his head laughing. ‘You two are nothing alike.’ He said getting out of the car. ‘I say that all the time.’ Kerrie said as Kayte shrugged. ‘I do give you credit. I don’t know many people that can work with autistic kids.’ Kayte said while walking into the house. The next few days passed by quickly and soon it was July 2nd the day Jessica was arriving. AJ, Brian, and his family were coming in the following night for a big 4th of July party.

Ch 16

On the 4th of July Kerrie and Howie spent the morning and early afternoon helping Nick get ready for the party. Both Howie and Kerrie liked Jessica right away due to her positive personality. At 4 everyone else started to arrive. Howie introduced Kerrie to AJ, Brian, Baylee, and Leighanne when they arrived. Kerrie went to go help out in the kitchen as Howie went to go talk to AJ. ‘She’s really nice.’ Howie smiled at his friend’s comment as AJ looked around the room. ‘Hey Kayte!’ Howie said as she walked over. ‘It’s crowded in here already.’ ‘Kayte, this is AJ. AJ, this is Kerrie’s sister, Kayte.’ ‘Nice to meet yea. Where is my sister anyway?’ ‘In the kitchen helping out.’ ‘Ok, see yea around.’ AJ watched her as she walked into the other room. ‘They look nothing alike.’ ‘Kerrie and Kayte have completely different personalities too.’ ‘Is she single?’ ‘Yea, Nick asked her out not long after he moved in and she turned him down.’ ‘Maybe cause she wants a real man.’ AJ said walking in the direction Kayte went in. Howie looked across the room to see Brian and Baylee laughing. Angel walked into the condo and looked around. She smiled as she saw Matt talking to Kerrie. Kerrie nudged Matt as he turned to see her. ‘Hey you!’ He said hugging Angel. ‘Hi Matt, how yea been?’ ‘Good, busy with work.’ ‘Same here.’ Angel mouthed “Thanks” as they walked out towards the deck. Nick stood at the grill outside and when he saw his youngest sister he smiled to himself. ‘Is that your sister?’ Jessica asked. ‘Yea, that’s Angel. I’ll let them talk for a bit before we interrupt.’

Ch 17

The rest of the party and the next day Kerrie and Howie were going to take Kerrie’s cousin’s daughter out for the day for her 4th birthday. ‘Kerrie, I’m here!’ Molly said tossing her backpack on the ground. ‘That’s great.’ ‘Mommy’s coming with my car seat so we can go out. Hi Howie and Nick!’ She said loudly waving in their direction. ‘I’m ready to go.’ Molly said happily. Corien came walking over with her car seat. ‘Are you taking her?’ Nick asked Howie quietly. ‘Kerrie and I are gonna take her out to eat and to see a movie.’ Nick nodded as he got up. ‘Have fun. I’m gonna head to the airport.’ ‘See yea later and good luck.’ Kerrie hooked up Molly’s car seat as she double checked that she had everything. ‘Are you two sure you want to take her?’ Corien asked. ‘It will be fun and it’ll give you a break.’ ‘Thanks so much and if you need anything just call the house.’ ‘Ok.’ ‘Bye momma!’ Molly said loudly before getting in the car. Kerrie buckled her in and Howie got into the front seat. ‘Kerrie, can we listen to High School Musical?’ ‘Sure, Mols. Anything you want.’ Molly handed Howie the CD case she was holding as Kerrie started the car. 20 minutes later they arrived at the mall and went to Rain Forest Cafe. Molly had them laughing the whole time and after eating they went to Build a Bear. They bought her a stuffed dog, a dog carrier, a harness, and a leash. After spending some more time at the mall they headed back to Charlestown. When they got back Kayte was outside with one of her friends so Molly ran over to show them her new presents. Corine came out to get Molly and she thanked Kerrie and Howie for taking her out. Kerrie and Howie went into Kerrie’s apartment to watch a movie and relax.

Ch 18

Pretty soon it was August. Kerrie and Kayte planned a trip to Disney months ago so Howie was planning on having Kerrie meet his family while she was down there. Howie left a week before having to finish up somethings in the studio. Nick had gone down at the end of July and was spending the rest of the summer looking for a bigger condo to buy in Boston. Jessica had gone home before Nick went to Florida but was planning on visiting again in September. ‘I hope your not gonna ditch me.’ Kayte mumbled as they walked off the plane in Orlando. ‘I’m not. Your gonna come to dinner with us the night I meet his parents. I think Howie might stop by one day with AJ.’ ‘At least I’ll be entertained.’ Kayte said as they waited for their bus to the hotel. That night the girls went to the Magic Kingdom. After spending several hours it was time for the park to close and the girls got their bus back to the hotel. ‘So tomorrow is the big day.’ Kayte said half smiling as they walked to their room. ‘Yea, it is.’ Kerrie said as they reached their door. ‘Nervous?’ ‘I will be tomorrow.’ ‘I’m sure everything will be fine.’ The next morning Kayte woke up first and got ready to go to one of the water parks. ‘Get up sleepy head.’ Kayte said tossing a pillow at her older sister. ‘It’s 9 already?’ ‘Yup, now get up. We’re leaving in 15 minutes.’ Kerrie tiredly got out of bed and grabbed her bathing suet before heading to the bathroom. On the way out the girls grabbed a light breakfast juice and a muffin to eat while waiting for the bus. They spent a few hours at the water park then went back to the hotel to get ready for dinner. Kerrie wore a pair of black dress pants and a halter top while Kayte wore a white skirt and black top. At 6 Howie picked them up outside the hotel. ‘Hi Howie.’ Kayte said getting into the car to give them some time. ‘You look nice.’ Howie said kissing her. ‘Thanks.’ ‘Don’t be nervous everyone will love you.’ He said opening her door. Kerrie nodded and got in.

Ch 19

20 minutes later they were waiting outside the restaurant for everyone. The first to arrive was Howie’s sister Pollyanna. Kerrie had talked to her on the phone before. ‘Kerrie, it’s nice to finally meet you in person!’ She said hugging her. ‘Polly this is Kerrie’s sister Kayte.’ ‘Nice to meet you.’ Next Howie’s brother John and this family then his sister, Angie and her family arrived. Last was his parents. So far everyone had been very friendly and happy to meet her. A black car pulled into the lot. ‘They’re here. Don’t worry they’ll love you just as much as everyone else.’ Pollyanna said quietly. 5 minutes later Howie’s parents walked over. ‘Hi hunny!’ His mother said hugging him. ‘Hi mom, Hi dad.’ ‘Where’s the young lady you’ve been talking about none stop.’ Hoke said as Howie’s cheeks flushed. ‘Mom and Dad, this is Kerrie and her sister Kayte.’ Paula put her arms out and hugged Kerrie. Right away she felt right at home The large group made their way inside for dinner. Kayte and Pollyanna started chatting about clothes as John asked Kerrie about life in Boston. After nearly four hours at the restaurant everyone went their separate ways. Howie dropped the girls off at their hotel. Kayte wandered inside to look for a soda machine leaving Kerrie and Howie to say good-bye. ‘I was thinking AJ and I might visit in two days.’ ‘Kayte and I are planing on going to the Magic Kingdom.’ ‘Sounds good. We’ll meet you here and take the bus in.’ ‘Sounds good. Do you guys want to meet here at 7:30 and we can go for breakfast?’ ‘Sure, I’ll talk AJ into it.’ ‘Good luck with that.’ ‘Well... he most likely will say yes since he does have the hots for Kayte.’ Kerrie started laughing. ‘I think she may like him a little too.’ ‘That’s good.’ ‘I’m gonna miss you.’ Kerrie said wrapping her arms around Howie’s waist. ‘Me too. But the day after tomorrow we’re gonna spend together.’ Kerrie nodded and kissed Howie. ‘I wish Kayte and I weren’t sharing a room.’ She said smirking. ‘Don’t be getting me in trouble now. There are kids around.’ He said kissing the top of her head. ‘Yea, I know.’ Kerrie mumbled. ‘I’ll see you the day after tomorrow.’ ‘Ok, love you.’ ‘I love you too.’ Howie said kissing her again. Kerrie walked inside waving as the passed through the door. Howie shook his head and got into the car. He dialed AJ’s cell phone. ‘Hey D!’ AJ said happily. ‘Hi AJ, the girls want us to meet them fro breakfast is that ok?’ ‘What time?’ AJ said not as cheerfully. ‘At 7:30.’ ‘In the morning?’ ‘Yes, in the morning. AJ come on I want this is be a special day-’ ‘Yea I know. When do you want to pick me up.’ Howie went over the details as he drove back to his house.

Ch 20

Kerrie walked into the hotel room to see Kayte flipping through a magazine. ‘I’m surprised that you returned.’ She said smirking. ‘Oh shut up.’ ‘I guess waiting to have sex that long turned you into a nympho.’ Kerrie tossed a shoe at Kayte as she let out a yelp. ‘Hey stop it, I wish I had a sex life now. Mine’s been non existent for some months.’ ‘Anyway the guys are meeting us for breakfast at 7:30 on Thursday.’ ‘Guys?’ ‘AJ is coming along.’ ‘Good at least I won’t be stuck with you love birds all day.’ Kayte said walking into the bathroom with her pjs. ‘Which park are we going to that day?’ Kerrie asked turing on the TV. ‘I think the Magick Kingdom since we’re going to Epcot tomorrow.’ ‘I’m gonna go grab a soda. Do you need anything?’ ‘I’ll go with yea, I might grab a snack.’ Meanwhile.... Nick was in LA working on some last minute vocals for the new BSB album. Jessica was also out there on business so they were spending a lot of time together. ‘I wonder how things are going in Florida.’ Jessica said as she and Nick walked down the street to a restaurant. ‘Howie got a ring.’ ‘An engagement ring?’ Jessica asked smiling. ‘Yea.’ ‘That’s so exciting!’ ‘Kayte said the same thing. She helped Howie out with the design.’ Nick gave Jessica all the details he knew as they order their food. ‘Do you want to come to the studio with me tomorrow? I’ll only be there for an hour or so then we can go out for lunch.’ ‘Sounds great.’ They continued chatting for the rest of their meal.
